G-tubes 101

This message is for everyone, but I especially have in mind those of you who have never had the privilage of being close to someone who depends on a g-tube for their nutritian. Here is your chance to stare without being rude! ; )

First off, the tools of the trade! Syringe, plunger, food and extension tube.
And of course the most importnat piece of all, the tube. There are lots of brands. Ours is a Mickey Button. These babies are "disposable" I change it at home as the need arises, usually once about every 4-6 months. Our best tube lasted 10 months. Without insurance or the blessing of Ebay each of these little suckers cost about $285.00 a pop.

And finally, all parts in action!

Put the syringe in the extension tube. Prime the extension tube with food to avoid air. Fill the syringe with food. Hook the extension tube to the G-tube and push with the plunger. Voila! Now you are ready to help out a tube feeding mom when her hands are full!

P.S. Just don't let go of the union between syringe and extension tube and keep a finger on the medicine port, many are the dangers of colorful explosions when you are moving food under pressure! : ) Oh, and if she looks like she is going to puke.......stop pushing!!!!!!!
