Big Girl
This is my daughter's proud face. Anytime she creates a work of art that she is proud of, she brings it directly to the fridge. The flower was so special that she didn't even want to take it off for the picture...it belongs on the fridge! She painted macaroni noodles orange, yellow and green and then glued them to make the flower outline. Her auntie helped her with this project. The chicky she made from yellow feathers.
And this picture captures much of the essence of my children. Baby "D" got into a little mischief and is now caught and he knows its. Big sis is trying desperately to fix the problem that she didn't create. She was even actually turning the tape the right direction! But alas, it was to big of a mess for even her capable hands. My daughter is one of the most thoughtful, caring, compassionate and orderly people that I know--she makes me want to be a better person, and I love her for it!

Projects
I have many home improvement aspirations, however there are certain things that are simply impossible to do without help. ...like getting that old wardrobe painted up to use for the kid's clothes.
Sooooo, new years day I took advantage of my SIL's presence as well as my husband's helping hands and we got the job done! I forgot to take the very first before picture, but here's a getting started snapshot.

And the finished product! All the black parts are done with chalkboard paint and can be drawn on with chalk.

Another pending "to-do" has been to change out Mic's tube. It was already looking iffy before our trip, but that little balloon hung on and hung on and made it to seven months, six days before it absolutely definitely HAD to come out. That's the most time we've ever got out of a tube, so I was pleased!!! I wanted to picture journal the steps to a tube change. I thought it would be very interesting for those who have never seen it done...however my little miss was NOT cooperating so the only picture we got that's good enough to post was the preliminary balloon check. But at least you can see what the tube looks like on the inside. The "top" is what you see on her tummy when its in and the "post" and balloon are what go on the inside of her. The balloon inflates and deflates through that little valve where I have the syringe stuck.

SIL helping with the backside...its use as a divider in the bedroom made painting all angles necessary.

Bittersweet
Sometimes I stop and remember...things about Mic's development...and how her little brother compares. Sometimes I stand still and just watch him doing what he does without thought or effort. It is beautiful. And sometimes...it hurts just a little...in a very odd sort of way.
Recently I noticed him crawl over a bump in the floor between the living room and and bathroom. He wanted to get to me and could care less that he had to go over a little step to do it. And I was transported back to the physical therapy days at Salem Rehab. The hours and agony. Wondering if she would ever be able to crawl over an obstical...any obstical, no matter how small. And guess what! She did...eventually...in her own time.
I watch him shoving food in his mouth so mindlessly, effortlessly. I worry he isn't eating enough even though I know that he is. And he doesnt think twice about chewing or swallowing. And I am dying to see her do the same thing.
And I have faith. I really do. I know it will happen...someday...
And I love each of them individually for who they are......but even so, sometimes it hurts...just a little.

OK lets see if I can get a little blip in before the lights take off again.
I wanted to share this morning's conversation between my preschooler and toddler concerning the contents of a sippy cup.
Mcqueen: "agua"
Mic responds quietly almost talking to herself: "no, leche"
Mcqueen: "AAAAAAAAgua"
Mic (much louder); "NO, leche"
Mcqueen: "AGUA!!!"
Mic: "NO, D. ITS LECHE"
glossary (for those who didn't pay attention in freshman Spanish):
Agua=water
Leche=milk
I am having flashbacks of my childhood, and little Mervie and I at the table have similarly important debates. Hee, Hee, something tells me I may pay my dues!

Fun in the Sun
Not to rub it in or anything, but we have been having unbelievably gorgeous weather for December. Decembers 2006 and '07 our good friend Titus spent here with us and one of the overwhelming memories of both those visits was the COLD COLD weather. But so far this Dec. has given us chilly nights and beautiful sunny days. Friday was no exception and we helped take the children from the orphanage on an outing to the zoo. Below are three of my favorite pictures from the day--backwards because dumb blogger once again switched them up on me!
By the end of the day ice cream and a rest in the shade were in order.
The giraffes are one of my favorites--they are beautiful animals, they are always out where you can see them, and they seem happy even if they aren't in the wild.
The whole group

Oh, and I just had to paste in this picture of Mic and her little friend Bless playing together in a cardboard box during their last playdate...too cute.

And He Is Off!!!
Saturday evening, Dec. 6 Baby D took his first steps! And he loved it so much he kept trying it over and over for about an hour. A couple steps, fall, a few more, fall. The gazillion falls on the cement floor didn't seem to faze him in the least. This video is from towards the end of the hour. I think he got as high as eleven steps in a row without falling. He is persistant and proud of himself. Needless to say, we are LOVING IT!!!

Laying my soul bare...
I feel the need to vent.
First let me say that being home, though not always "easy" has been good for Mic and her oral feeding. Sticking to the structure is a vital part of the follow through for her feeding therapy and we are doing a little better with that part since we have been home again. In general she really is doing well, and there are areas where we can see progress. However, please understand that progress is a BIG continuem, and on the overall scale her progress is almost too small to percieve, but it is none-the-less very real. Her attitude towards food continues to improve. She enjoys participating, expresses hunger and asks to eat. She is gaining ground little by little in variety and in mixing flavors or textures. These are all areas where she does still have a ways to go......but she is "going" and that is HUGE!
The areas that are really hard are that her swallow is still very ineffecient and slow, which makes each meal REALLY SLOW and it is really hard work for everyone involved. (no, we don't know why)
This, in turn, engages me in an emotional battle. Sometimes I feel peppy, energized and full of life, patience and fresh ideas for the meal at hand...and some times I just don't. Sometimes I want to run away and hide, I feel like I can see in my mind an endless parade of breakfast, lunch and dinner stretched out endlessly before me, day in and day out and the battle that each one represents and I feel like I am drowning in an inescapable thing far to big for me to be able to face.
(now for the real vent)
Then there are times like yesterday, when I am face to face with a medical professional whom I respect but with whom I DO NOT see eye to eye. And I start to feel like all the frusteration and insecurity within me is a boiling volcano that must find an escape before something blows. Yesterday I sat down with the nutritianist. She really has no concept...of any of it. She sees Mic, the numbers which mark her reality, the need for her to feed orally, and the need to get complete nutritian into her body. All good and true things, but not nearly as black and white as they sound. Mic doesn't fit in her neatly made boxes. She glanced at about three of my twenty some pages of feeding diary and told me not to bother trying to add the calories anymore because my numbers are wrong and that its her job not mine. She didn't even look at every page, so obviously if it is her job (which it isn't) she isn't doing it anyway. She, like every other medical professional we deal with, does not agree with my stance on homeschooling and makes me feel horribly insecure about what I believe trully is the best for my daughter (and ties it into oral feeding which irritates me to no end). She does not seem capable to take it in when I try to explain what I feed her, how I feed her and why I do it that way, and simply seems to expect me to mindlessly follow her orders instead. And she is nice the whole time, so I can't even really justify getting mad. GRRRRRR
I really am not looking for sympathy--its hard enough to keep from throwing myself a pity party the way it is. But I would LOVE any prayers you feel led to lift up for us. Mostly......I just thought it might be helpful to try and be honest and unload.
Thanks for listening.

Loving the language!
This morning two little rascels were in my bed with me. Mcqueen got me square in the forhead with the cell phone, "accidently". It really hurt for a minute there. I sat rubbing the spot and groaning a bit. Mic reached over patted my hand and said clear as a bell, "Don cry, mommy, you OK, you OK". ; )

......and more THANKS!
We are home, safe and sound. We were able to take joy in the Lord's favor the whole trip long. Packing--went smoothly, even with two kiddlings taking off with things! : )
Security--went smoothly despite them checking every single liquid we had along with special chemicals to make sure I wasn't planning on blowing anything up! They didn't take anything away from us.
Customs--cleared without a hitch!
Immigration--ditto
The kids--traveled valiently
All praise to God alone, He is so good to us! : )
...more later.
